“THE X-FACTOR” SINGERS LISTEN UP! FACT IS YOU MAY BE BETTER THAN WHAT A TV PRODUCER NEEDS – Singers Alert Series One
ARE YOU A SINGER?
HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO GET NOTICED?
Author- Chrisse Feros, Associate The Recording Academy USA, (The Grammy’s), A Winner Billboard World Song Contest 2010, Master Degree of Music, 17 International Awards, Member National Association Record Industry Professionals USA.
Attention all singers, let’s get down to the real stuff!
Have you just auditioned for The X-Factor or American Idol, maybe you tried out for Australian Idol, or you tried to sing for a television audition, you’re totally confused by the whole industry, disappointed, and feel harshly judged.
So you are a singer, or a “maybe one day” singer. This article has been written in order to assist all aspiring artists in their journey towards their dreams.
Firstly, lets decide if you are a singer or not. Have you ever been assessed by an accredited and well know coach in the vocal industry? If you haven’t, get yourself there soon.
There are three types of singers in my world as a music producer and vocal coach.
Type A who are natural born singers, who have a natural and beautiful pitch (singing in tune all the time guys- thats what pitch is) and of course tonal quality which is mesmerising.
Type B are the singers who are manufactured singers, ie pitch is not natural, and tone is unimaginative, and the tracks produced in studio need bucketloads of tricks to make them passable.
Type C are the hopefuls- who are usually so amazingly keen, who have no idea of pitch and tone at all, often likened to the sounds of a cat yodelling on a roof convinced they’re singing in great voice and also truly believing that they sound exactly like Lady Gaga or Usher or whoever their idol maybe. This is not a criticism or judgement from me, it is a catagory for a group of people who lack certain attributes required to become singers.
Type C can sometimes get very aggresive about simple truths, however there are some Type C hopefuls who are very genuine and I feel sad to see them used as a “laugh” or a “clown” on the TV programs.
So let’s look at the HEADSPACE of all singers – we have to ask ourselves this.
“Am I being realistic about myself, are all my friends telling me I’m great therefore I am great, have I been told by a professional vocal coach where I really stand, and am I taking on board what comments they have made to me?”
You may be a brilliant singer, however, you may be too good for a television program, for example, what can they work with on you, how can you be stamped with their development people if you are already at top level, it doesnt fit into the algebra math required for TELEVISION RATINGS.
Being fair to the producers of all television production – if the program or series can incite people to want to become better at something, if it can excite people and bring pleasure and start a dream for contestants or non-contestants, well then isn’t that a job well done?
How to get noticed? Here are some tips.
Type A singers, with ongoing vocal coaching from a tough coach you stand the best chance. Choose a style which suits your voice and that you love, it should have the stylistic nuances in it that make you sound even better than you already are. If you are a natural urban singer why would you want to sing heavy metal, or vice versa. Get the ammunition you need from your coach to make inroads into the industry, and LISTEN to what your coach tells you.
Type B singers, some of you guys can actually get loads better with heavy and hard training, but sadly I don’t often come across the Type B’s coming to masterclasses. Resist the temptation to think you doing OK, because there will always be Type A’s out there with a recorded track on the desk who will sound better than you (possibly). I have great hope for some Type B’s who take on the task of getting great, because you can hear the emotion in the tonal quality, they’ve worked so very hard to get good.
Type C hopefuls are not natural singers, in that there is an inability to even hear that they’re so out of pitch. The ear and brain signals which are highly developed in Type A singers, are something that are underdeveloped in Type C’s and this inability to hear and sing great pitch is going to let you down. Even with extensive training which is mainly training the ear, the Type C hopeful could be at it for a very long time just pulling up to intermediate level. Type C hopefuls should “sing” whenever they want. In fact everyone should sing, doesn’t matter what type they are. However, Type C’s – stand proud, be assessed by a professional, and don’t let the television make a complete fool out of you.

I want to pierce my ears but don’t know where to go?
I keep reading everywhere that I shouldn’t go to Claires or Pagoda cause they use piercing guns and there not safe and what not. And I also read not to go to a tattoo shop and go to a professional. But whats a professional piercer? Cause I saw Oprah get her ears pierced on TV with a piercing gun she had no problem. And I know people who have gotten there’s ears pierced at Pagoda and there fine. Plus they train there piercers. So where should I go and how much would it cost just for a simple ear piercing
No i’m not piercing the cartilage i’m piercing the lobe
Piercing guns are fine as long as they are sterilized. I got my ears pierced at Claire’s and they didn’t get infected at all. They sterilize their guns there before each use, so it’s completely fine. If you get them pierced at Claire’s, it’s free for the piercing, all you need to purchase is the actual earrings, so it depends on which ones you pick!
Hope this helps!!
