I need to buy a digital cable converter box for my TV. Would a regular digital converter box that you can buy anywhere work just the same?
NO – They are NOT the same and a digital TV box will NOT work on a cable system.
A digital TV converter box acts as a TV tuner it takes the Digital Off Air TV Channel and converts the signal to analog so a non digital TV can display the picture.
A cable converter box is provided by the cable company. The box must be authorized by the cable system for it to work. It has two functions. It also acts as a TV tuner but..
1. It takes the signal sent out buy the cable system on the cable wire and maps it to a TV channel for viewing. It displays what the channel is and sends the picture to the TV set for you to watch.
2. It takes the scrambled cable TV signal and unscrambles it so you can watch that channel.
The box is authorized by the cable system as to which channels it is allow to display a picture on.
A cable converter box might also contain a digital video recorder (DVR) so you can record a TV show.
