Can I use a full hdtv ntsc/atsc/qam bought in the USA in countries where the signal is usually PAL?
In theory, no. In reality, it depends on the TV. Some of them quietly have PAL support. Either its actually listed somewhere on a spec sheet or its just kind of swept under the rug. If it was swept under the rug though, then you need to find a PAL source to test it out to know for sure.
We bought a HDTV from Costco a while back, for the office. We were using it only for NTSC. But one day decided to feed a PAL signal to it and see what happened. What would you know, it played it back. It never said anywhere that it would do that, but it did anyway. We did have to go component in though, composite in is not good enough (HDMI would likely work too).
Finding a PAL source though might be easier said then done (if you want to test it). If you know of anyone into professional film/tv gear they could do it. As long as they have a high end video card with component or HDMI out and an NLE with some 25fps/50i footage. But depending on where you live that might be a tall order.
