Will a plasma (LCD TV) work with Basic cable connection?
I have a basic cable connection ($13 per month). I am finding a great deal on a LCD TV. Will it work well with my cable connection? Or do I have to upgrade to a digital cable ($60 per month)? OR even worse, do I have to upgrade to a HD programming?
I dont want to spend $70-80 per month for the stupid idiot box. However, it is good to have a big flat screen TV for watching very selected programs that I follow.

Just wanted to get the nitpicking out of the way first.
An LCD TV and plasma TV are different things.
OK, with that out of the way, I have a suggestion.
1. Buy a TV with a QAM tuner. Most new sets are including QAM, but it pays to check the specs.
2. With a QAM tuner, you will be able to access unencrypted digital channels on your cable system. This will typically include the broadcast network HD feeds (e.g. ABC, FOX, NBC, etc). And this is with the Basic package (~$13). If you want more HD channels (e.g. ESPN-HD, DiscoveryHD, etc), you’ll need to pay for a higher package also a STB or CableCard – more money.
3. One comment about “digital” cable. As long as your coax cables are in good shape, you won’t need anything extra for digital. They send the same exact signal down the wire if you subscribe to digital or basic. You just need a tuner (that’s where the QAM tuner comes in). Caveat – they may install a filter to block the frequencies that the digital channels come in on.
4. QAM channel assignments are not the same as the cable guide or newspaper assignments. You’ll need to search around to find the channels. Be prepared to delete the channels that have no programming. And from time to time, the cable company may re-map the channels, so you have to do it over. But getting 6 to 7 HD channels for “free” is worth the inconvenience.
